How do I quickly insert an extended character into my document?

There is a huge range of extended characters that you can easily insert into a document (eg Word).  To pull off this amazing trick, hold down the ALT key, and use the number pad to type the number associated with the character you are after.  Once you have entered the numbers, release the ALT key and the character will be inserted.
