Vista Product Keys and Activation

  • If you install Vista and don't use a product key...it will give you 30 days trial to use before you have to activate...when the 30 days is close open the command prompt and type "rundll32 slc.dll,SLReArmWindows" without the quotes. Another 30 days should go by and when its close do the command again to re-enable the 30 days so that will give you 90 days overall to evaluate the product.

System Information Application winmsd, msinfo32 msinfo32
Windows Help helpctr.exe HelpPane.exe
Help Protocol hcp:// Not available any more
Restore Points System Restore Points Previous Versions Tab - It looks as if the restores can be done at a file or folder level now.  Also unlike Shadow Copy for Shared folders in Windows Server 2003 this can be used on local files and folders.  Shadow Copy could only be used for Shares in 2003.
Rename Files Behaviour Rename would select the whole file name including the file extension.
Rename only selects the file name and not the extension.  See below...

    What's New!

Description Windows Vista
Task Manager - Services Tab.

This allows much more granular interrogation of the services that are running on a machine and we can now easily see the services hidden inside one PID.
This was a problem in Windows XP with the svchost.exe see 314056 - A description of Svchost.exe in Windows XP.

Task Manager - Process Tab.

The process tab now includes "Image Path Name" and "Command Line".

These both allow you to know exactly which exe has been run and which switches were used to initiate it.

Side Bar

Cool and Groovy Gadgets to place functionality on your desktop, the IT guys will love it.

Oh well at least I do.
If you want to see the full list of Gadgets go to

Windows System Performance Rating

Vista Help says:

"Measures the capability of your computer's hardware configuration and expresses this measurement as a whole number."

"A higher performance rating means your computer will perform better and faster, especially when performing more advanced and resource-intensive tasks, than a computer with a lower performance rating."

I got a 1!

I guess my poor old Dell Laptop is struggling a bit. ;-)

Data Execution Prevention

DEP is a security feature that can help prevent damage to your computer from viruses and other security threats.

DEP can help protect your computer by monitoring your programs to make sure that they use system memory safely.

If DEP notices a program on your computer using memory incorrectly, it closes the program and notifies you.

Back and Restore Center

Re-engineered backup interface!

Back and Restore Center

Windows Backup has received a facelift.  There seem to be some big differences between ntbackup.exe and the new sdcli.exe

We can now Backup straight to DVD.

Applications that have earned the Certified for Windows Vista logo or the Works with Windows Vista logo

Symantec Anti-Virus

I suspect that most vendors will be affected by the new OS and it's layout.

Although my scans still work in the whole, I can't use Auto-Protect and Vista squawks as follows...

I had to reinstall Visat and now Symantec will not even install

CheckPoint Secure Client - R55

This is fairly annoying as I don't seam to be able to gleam any functionality at all.

CheckPoint Secure Client - R60

I upgraded to NGX R60 HFA-01 and.....ended up with a loop between these two dialog boxes.
